Stay Out Of The Dental Danger Zone

Stay Out Of The Portland Dental Danger Zone

You would never consider running a red light on a busy Clackamas street or crossing over a lane of orange construction cones on the freeway, but you might be doing some everyday things that are a real danger to your oral health.

I’m Dr. Brian Westover DMD, a dentist serving the Oregon City and Gladstone area, and I want to share with you some common habits that could be detrimental to the health of your teeth.

Crunching ice between your teeth might be refreshing on a nice day in Clackamas, but the soft tissue inside your teeth won’t appreciate it. Once this tissue gets irritated, you’re more likely to get toothaches and have increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

Participating in your favorite sport without proper mouth protection is a risk that no one in Clackamas should take. If there is a chance that a mouth injury could occur (and there is with most sports) then get to the nearest Portland sporting goods store and purchase an inexpensive mouth guard or, better yet, ask me about a custom mouthguard.

Using your teeth to open anything is a bad idea. Every time your teeth come in contact with foreign objects there is potential for chipping and cracking.

Now that you know how to avoid these risks, what can you do if you’ve already damaged your teeth from these activities or similar ones? Make an appointment with our friendly staff and we’ll see how we can help.

If you’ve had chipping or cracking problems, there are a variety of general dentistry procedures that might help you. If you have overly-sensitive teeth, I may be able to prescribe a prescription toothpaste to relieve the pain.

Most Portland people know that vitamin D is important for healthy teeth and bones, but many of us fail to get adequate amounts. Today’s article is a friendly reminder to our patients – especially expectant mothers – about the importance of vitamin D.

Here is a sampling of vitamin D findings from around the web:

“Several recent reports demonstrate a significant association between periodontal health and the intake of vitamin D.” 1

“Researchers who took a second look at a series of clinical trials conducted on 2,000 children in several countries between the 1920s and 1980s determined vitamin D — which we often garner from sunlight — was associated with around a 50 percent reduction in the incidence of tooth decay.”2

“Inadequate vitamin D levels in pregnant women may be associated with dental caries in their children during the first year of life.”3

“The sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, but it is hard to quantify how much vitamin D you get from time in the sun and the risk of skin cancer may outweigh the benefits. Food first, says Baylor College of Medicine dietitian Keli Hawthorne. “Supplements can fill in the gaps but it is always better to try to meet your nutritional needs with foods that contain fiber, phytonutrients, and so much more,” Unless you enjoy a diet that includes fatty fish or fish liver oils, it may be hard to get enough vitamin D naturally without eating fortified foods or taking a supplement. “The major dietary source of vitamin D comes from fortified diary, along with some yogurts and cereals,” Hawthorne says. Mushrooms, eggs, cheese, and beef liver contain small amounts.” 4

I’m Brian Westover DMD and Robert Kowal DDS of Brookside Dental in Clackamas. I encourage all of my patients to practice preventative medicine by eating a healthy diet complete with all vital nutrients. At Brookside Dental, we offer the full complement of dental services in our well-appointed office. Ask us about emergency dentistry, porcelain crowns, or teeth whitening.

We are currently accepting new patients at Brookside Dental. My friendly team of dental professionals would love to serve your family with all of their dental needs. You can schedule an appointment by calling 503-905-3380.

Dr. Robert Kowal DDS knows when a simple problem can become serious

canker sore treatment Portland

Today in the Clackamas family dentist blog we are going to discuss those small irritations in the mouth that have the potential to become big problems.

Injuries, sores, or inflammation in the mouth can be very uncomfortable. These non-specific irritations, called stomatitis, have many different causes. They may be cause by cold sores, gum disease, or biting the inside of your mouth. They may also be cause by the irritation that results from broken teeth or braces.

In fact, any inflammation of the membranes in the mouth can be classified as stomatitis. Stomatitis can affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, and even to fall asleep at night. These pests can really have an impact on the lives of Gresham, Oregon City, and Gladstone residents!

The good news is that most of these irritations clear up on their own in less than two weeks. However, there is a possibility that a viral or bacterial infection can occur, so it’s important to let your Portland dentist know about these sores. Even if there are no complications, your dentist can help you treat the symptoms of stomatitis with pain relievers and at-home remedies such as salt water rinses.

Hi, my name is Dr. Brian Westover DMD and Robert Kowal DDS. I take care of patients in the Portland area at my comfortable and friendly Clackamas dental office. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover, give us a call at 503-905-3380.

Common cosmetic dentistry procedures used in smile makeovers include teeth whitening, gum contouring, veneers, dental bonding, and dental implants.

We hope to see you in our Clackamas office soon!

What is more valuable than a diamond?

Every tooth in a man’s head is more valuable than a diamond.
-Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605

Clackamas cosmetic dentistry When Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, there was no way to replace teeth that were lost to trauma or decay. We are fortunate to live here in Clackamas at a time where there is a permanent cutting-edge replacement for missing teeth – the amazing Dental Implant.

A dental implant, or tooth implant, is anchored into the jaw bone. It does not slide around like a removable denture. It functions just like a natural tooth.

With a dental implant, you can talk, chew, and brush like normal. Eat that steak. Laugh out loud. Sing at the top of your lungs!

The dental implant procedure available in Clackamas is not an experimental treatment. Dental implants have been available for many years. You can be sure that the dental implant procedure has been fully tested and tweaked to perfection. The success rate for dental implants in Clackamas is almost one hundred percent.

If you have a missing tooth and want to get a tooth implant, it is important to choose an experienced Clackamas dental specialist to perform your implant procedure. To schedule a dental implant or cosmetic dentistry consultation at Brookside Dental, call 503-905-3380.

A dental implant is a strong and beautiful tooth replacement that, incidentally, is less costly than a diamond of similar size. (See the quote at the beginning of this article.) To discuss financing options, contact our office.

At Brookside Dental, we offer comprehensive dental services including: dental implantsInvisalign invisible braces, and emergency dentistry.

Teeth: What have they done for you lately?

Portland dental implants

Welcome to the Portland dental blog! Today we are going to explore the secret life of our teeth.

The shape of each tooth gives a clue to what it does. The incisors, or your front teeth, are sharp. They need to be because their job is to cut food and their curvature helps move food inside the mouth.

Behind the incisors, you find the canine teeth. Their roots go far into the jaw bone because they are designed to hold onto food and tear through it.

Premolars, found just behind the canines, are flat on the surface. This allows them to crush your food as you chew. And, finally, in the very back are the molars. They are large and have nice, flat chewing surfaces that help them to grind food down into smaller, more digestible pieces.

I’m Dr. Brian Westover DMD and Robert Kowal DDS, a
friendly Clackamas dentist. I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little more about the different teeth in your mouth.

If you are in the Gresham, Oregon City, or Gladstone area and would like to make an appointment at my practice, Brookside Dental, please give us a call at 503-905-3380. We can schedule an appointment and tell you about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as porcelain veneers and teeth whitening.

If you’ve ever been interested in a smile makeover, we would love to discuss the possibilities. I want my Portland dental patients to have healthy mouths and beautiful smiles. At Brookside Dental, we offer comprehensive dental services including: dental implants, Invisalign invisible braces, and emergency dentistry.

It’s a great time to have ugly teeth!

Gladstone cosmetic smile makeover

Huh? Yep, it’s true. It’s a great time to have ugly teeth because unprecedented cosmetic dentistry provides several procedures to turn ugly to unbelievably beautiful.

Teeth whitening can benefit almost every adult. Years of staining can be magically erased in a day at your Clackamas dentist’s office or over a few months with an affordable at-home kit. This popular treatment gives you a lot of bang for your cosmetic dental buck.

If your teeth are slightly crooked or have small chips or cracks, minimally-invasive porcelain veneers could be the answer. A veneer is a translucent, wafer-thin cover that is permanently attached to the front of a tooth. Many people get veneers on the upper front teeth for a fabulous smile renewal. Call Brookside Dental at 503-905-3380 to learn more about fantastic veneers.

Have your gums receded and thereby exposed the metal base of an old dental crown? Soft tissue grafts and/or crown replacement can correct this common problem. Call Brookside Dental at 503-905-3380 to schedule a gum-contouring consultation.

A missing tooth detracts from your smile, even if your other teeth look great. Many Clackamas people have benefited from dental implants. A dental implant consists of a titanium post surgically inserted into the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. The post integrates with the bone to provide a stable foundation for the natural-looking crown. Dental implants can also anchor full or partial dentures and significantly improve life for denture wearers.

If your teeth have severe alignment problems, we encourage you to think about braces. Clackamas dental patients of all ages are undergoing orthodontic treatment to straighten their teeth and transform their smile. The newest braces are faster, less noticeable, and more comfortable than ever before.

Other cosmetic dental procedures available at Brookside Dental in Clackamas are inlays/onlays, dental crowns, and white fillings. If you have an ugly smile, the Brookside Dental team of superior dental professionals is committed to making it remarkable. Call 503-905-3380 today!

Wear a crown in portland

Wear A Crown In Portland

Some Clackamas residents who have a weak or broken tooth may want to research dental crowns as a solution to improve their smile and overall oral health. A crown is really a cap or covering that is tooth-shaped and when it is in place, it will cover the portion of the covered tooth that is above the gum line.

Crowns can be made of metals, resin, ceramic, porcelain, or a porcelain-fused-to-metal material. Your Clackamas area dentist will usually put in a temporary crown while a permanent crown is being created especially for your mouth in a dental laboratory.

Dental crowns have been used successfully in Clackamas cosmetic dentistry for decades.

Many dentists use crowns when performing smile makeovers to cover patient’s discolored or poorly shaped teeth. Strong, natural-looking crowns are also used with dental implants.

If you think a dental crown may be right for you, check with your Portland dentist. Or, if you are searching for quality dental care in the Portland area, call us here at Brookside Dental. We are located in Clackamas and have been serving the greater Clackamas area since 2011. We are currently accepting new patients at our state-of-the art, yet warm and comfortable dental office.

Call us at 503-905-3380 and our friendly staff can answer any questions you have about teeth whitening in Clackamas, veneers or any other cosmetic dental, general oral health, or dental financing questions.
